Community. It’s a word we hear constantly these days, and while it might feel like the latest buzzword, its significance cannot be overstated. This year, perhaps more than ever, we’ve seen how vital it is to be part of something larger than ourselves. From watching our kids play soccer or perform in dance recitals to meeting with fellow entrepreneurs or attending conferences, one truth stands out: we thrive when we come together.
At its core, a community is defined as a group of people living in the same place or sharing a common characteristic. Meetings and events share a similar purpose: bringing individuals together to collaborate, exchange ideas, build relationships, and work toward shared goals. When these two forces—community and events—combine, they create platforms for connection, empowerment, and belonging.
Why Community Is Crucial
This year hasn’t been easy. Economic uncertainties, job transitions, personal challenges, illnesses, and taking risks with delayed rewards have affected so many of us. But what we’ve also witnessed is the incredible power of community to support and uplift. When someone struggled, they turned to their network for encouragement, resources, and solutions. Community isn’t just a feel-good concept—it’s a lifeline.
We recently had the privilege of experiencing this firsthand at The Permission Slip Conference in Knoxville, Tennessee. The 2023 event was a massive gathering with hundreds of women coming together for a day of star-studded speakers and overflowing inspiration. But this year was different—smaller, more intimate, and not by design.
The event creators made a bold decision to scale back, and instead of hundreds, only 30 women attended for a deeply immersive three-day experience. What could have been seen as a loss turned into something extraordinary. Those of us who attended didn’t just hear inspiration from a stage; we formed genuine connections. We dug deep, shared openly, cried together, and built relationships that will endure long after the event.
It was a powerful reminder that community doesn’t have to be big to be meaningful. It just has to be purposeful and effective.
How Events Foster Community
Events play a critical role in building and sustaining communities. Whether it’s a conference, a corporate meeting, or a grassroots gathering, events create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and connected. These gatherings enable us to share information, address challenges, celebrate achievements, and collectively work toward solutions.
The magic of events is in their ability to turn a group of individuals into a united community. This transformation happens not just through logistics or planning but through the people who come together with a shared purpose. It’s in the relationships built, the ideas exchanged, and the bonds formed.

Community doesn’t have to be large; it just has to be intentional. It’s built on relationships, trust, and a shared purpose. As we move forward, let’s remember the importance of creating spaces where people can connect, collaborate, and grow together.
